Dentil Implants Q & A

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are manufactured "anchors" that look like cylinders or screws. They’re artificial replacements for natural tooth roots. Implants are used in both the upper and lower jaw areas.

Made of titanium and other materials, implants are sturdy and are well-suited to the human body. They attach and meld to the jawbone and gum tissue, becoming a stable base for one or more custom artificial replacement teeth, called dental crowns.

No matter your age, implants can be used to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or to support partial or full dentures. They help restore your ability to chew food and help fill out a sunken facial appearance caused by missing teeth. Unlike dentures, implants are fixed restorations, meaning they aren’t removed for overnight soaking and cleaning.

Why do some patients love dental implants?

Beyond looking, feeling, and functioning like your natural teeth, dental implants offer the following benefits:

  • Can last a lifetime with good care
  • Are a cost-effective way to replace missing teeth
  • Help maintain your natural face shape and restore your smile
  • Protect your healthy jawbone
  • Help maintain the integrity of surrounding natural teeth
  • Help you talk casually and without worry
  • Don’t slip out of your mouth
  • Are sturdy enough for chewing all types of foods
  • Aren't vulnerable to cavities with an implanted crown
  • Offer a time-tested, predictable result for tooth repair

What is the process for getting dental implants like?

Receiving dental implants is generally a three-part process that takes several months. Here’s how it works:

Step 1

Your dentist surgically places the implant in the jaw, with the top of the implant slightly above the top of the bone. They insert a screw into the implant to prevent gum tissue and other debris from entering. Next, they carefully secure the gum tissue over the implant.

The implant will remain covered for 3-6 months while it fuses with the bone during a process called "osseointegration." There may be some swelling, tenderness, or both for a few days after the surgery, so pain medication is usually prescribed to alleviate the discomfort. A diet of soft foods, cold foods, and warm soup often is recommended during the healing process.

Step 2

When you come back in, your dentist uncovers the implant and attaches an extension, or a “post”, to the implant. The gum tissue is allowed to heal around the post. Some implants require a second surgical procedure in which a post is attached to connect the replacement teeth. With other implants, the implant and post are a single unit placed in the mouth during the initial surgery. Once healed, the implant and post can serve as the foundation for the new tooth.

Step 3

Lastly, your dentist makes a crown that blends together with surrounding teeth, matching their size, shape, and color. Once completed, the crown is attached to the implant post.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

You are if you're in good health and have healthy gums and adequate bone to support an implant. You must be committed to thorough oral hygiene to keep your mouth in top shape, as well as scheduling regular dental visits to maintain your implants. During an initial consultation, ask Dr.Tickoo if implants are a good option for you to restore your smile.
